Symptoms may include a decrease in engine performance, increased exhaust emissions, rattling noises from the converter, and the illumination of the "Check Engine" light.

Repairing a catalytic converter is uncommon. It's often more cost-effective to replace it due to the complexity of the internal catalyst and potential for contamination. Regular vehicle maintenance, including fixing exhaust system leaks and promptly addressing engine issues, can contribute to the longevity of a catalytic converter. Common causes include engine misfires, oil or coolant contamination, physical damage, and the use of leaded gasoline.
